THE SOUTHDOWN TRUST

Registered Charity No. 235583

About Us

The Southdown Trust advances the education of young people between the ages of seventeen and twenty six years.

1.      Funding Schemes

The Trust operates two types of funding scheme.

1.1    Award Schemes

The Trust works for the public benefit by providing Awards to support students who have been educated in deprived areas of England and Wales. It selects and works with further and higher educational colleges and universities based in those areas. At present the Trust works with:

  • Camborne School of Mines, at Penryn in Cornwall;
  •  Eastern School of Performing Arts, at Stamford in Lincolnshire;
  •  Yeovil College University Centre, at Yeovil in Somerset.

The selected colleges and universities use their on-the-spot knowledge of those of their students who have applied to them internally for an Award, and recommend applicants for an Award to the Trust. The Trust reviews periodically its agreements with its selection of organisations and also that selection itself.

The Southdown Trust no longer accepts applications directly, either from individuals or from other organisations.

The Awards may be applied for from the first year onwards of the Award applicant’s course at up to undergraduate level, to be received in the current academic year for one-year courses and in the following academic year for multi-year courses. The Trust would expect an Award to be repeated annually until the end of the recipient’s course, subject to the recipient’s satisfactory progress. Awards are generally made as single payments each year, but may be paid in stages.

1.2    Bursary Schemes

The Southdown Trust has set up bursary schemes with Winchester College in Hampshire and with Christ Church at Oxford University, the alma maters of John Wyatt, the Trust's late Founder. These bursaries are managed by their respective educational organisations. They provide financial support to outstanding students.

2.      Funding

The Southdown Trust’s income arises from its own investment portfolio. Additional gifts may be received from time to time. The Southdown Trust’s financial accounts and other details are available on the Trust’s page on the Charity Commission’s website.

3.      Contact
